Hi. Welcome to the Twitch Dry Needling video training series where I’ll show you a fantastic dry needling technique followed by a manual therapy technique to get great results for your patients every time.
These Dry Needling Techniques should only be applied by trained therapists who have completed an accredited course.
Okay, what do you do with a patient who’s got pain between the shoulder blades? I’m going to show you a dry needling technique for thoracic erector spinae with a follow up manual therapy technique to get great results for anyone who’s complaining of pain in that area and you want to get more extension in that mid thoracic group.
Okay. So, thoracic erector spinae. Can needle these very straight forwardly just in here. You can do that on one side or both depending on the patient and their presentation. Then follow up with a manual therapy technique. So, essentially you’re going to get the patient to get into this position here, very similar to the sphinx position in yoga where we’re going to apply a lever with the arms out in this position and our fulcrum here, our contact point here on that flexed group. So, we’re going to get extension in here.
I’m going to show you two ways to get extension in here very easily. So, thenar eminence over the SPs. I’m going to lift up like this and get some extension in here together with some side bending, together with some rotation as well. You can do that both over here and in here. But what if you can’t do that? Incidentally, if you were going to do that technique, you want your stronger arm over here. So, that you do it on this side of the table so you can lift that group, the head and the shoulders and the arms up. Otherwise, you won’t be able to do that.
What if you can’t do that anyway? It’s too strong a technique. What you can do is use some pillows to raise the arms up just in here lifting up into extension. That’s going to do the work for you already. You don’t have to lift up as much. If you want to apply some rotation to that as well and some side bending, then you can put the pillows around here either on here for example, underneath this elbow. That’s going to create that extension for you already with the rotation and even some side bending as well. A really strong technique to get some extension for that stubborn group of flexed thoracic vertebrae just in here. Hope that helps.
